Booze and Breakfast: Cereal milk, oatmeal, bacon and coffee

Things quieted down recently while work on Barcode Magazine took over.  In honor of that work, this edition of links all celebrate the beautiful combo of booze and breakfast.

• Culinary heartthrobs Alie & Georgia took this idea literally by discovering a way to use cereal (specifically its milk) in an original, killer cocktail.

• Oatmeal has never been our favorite, but when it’s infused with bourbon we’ll at least listen.

• If our recent bacon whiskey didn’t appeal, perhaps a Bacon Bloody Mary better suits your fancy.

• Finally, these bottles look like classic brews but they’re actually freshly brewed and iced.

Food Kickstarters, Mothers’ Day meal, competitive eaters in my neighborhood and ToTs

• This week’s featured Kickstarter projects advertised some food court photography (it’s more about general malls + patrons) but they did have a charming food-related initiative with a children’s book about a burrito written by a mother/daughter team.

• So you can provide 360-degree coverage of Mothers’ Day ,the local paper has recipes from local mothers and Bon Appetit has recipes for your mother.

• My love for competitive eating is long documented, which is why the timing for this news couldn’t be worse. Joey Chestnut and other giants of the majors are coming through ‘Cuse to battle salt potatoes… over Syracuse University Commencement Weekend 2011. Maybe I can swing a preview at least.

• Lastly, at the above event, local rap icon ToTs is at least casually mentioning a campaign to perform. If you’re unfamiliar with his work, Jerk Magazine recently ran a quick Q&A.

A week’s worth of food spawning a week’s worth of links

Today’s trivial links courtesy of my last week of eating…

• Finally had the immense pleasure of eating at Wylie Dufresne‘s wd-50 this weekend. Not only did it blow away the hype (any breakfast junkie needs his eggs benedict) but it’s also mindblowingly affordable considering the prestige. Make sure to keep an eye out on Print Magazine next month as he talks food design, turn an eye on these menu pics or the recipe redesign contest he judged for now

• While in NYC, I also found my way to a small Astoria place called The Kebab Cafe. Hardcore Bourdain fans may remember it because of Ali and co.’s quick spot on No Reservations. It’s expensive but a well-worth it experience. Ali personally delivers and introduce his hand-selected menu of authentic Egyptian cuisine… which may often include parts most don’t eat regularly (testicle, sweetbread, tongue, liver, etc.). Not exactly a hot spot for vegetarians, though NPR recently said bacon could be their gateway so to speak.
  

• Finally, a few days earlier I provided some videography work for the March of Dimes Signature Chefs event here in CNY. That good deed got me access to all the good feed (? sorry).  The list of restaurants represented was a who’s who of the area’s highend cuisine. A few of the better dishes from the night are in the brief slideshow below.

• It’s a big week for Syracuse food (more on that in a second) but no news was bigger in our eyes than this: new ownership for Doc’s Little Gem Diner intend to reopen the place still primarily as a diner. Good to know things will get livelier there soon.

• The more pressing news is the start of Syracuse Downtown Dining Week.  Here’s a quick list of some potential best-of’s to try throughout the two weeks (and don’t forget to take pictures and submit for the official contest).  If for some reason you can’t make it out, there’s always WinterFest at the end of the month.

• This week Oreos set a world-record for Facebook “Likes” (only to be outdone by Lil’ Wayne the same day).

• Finally, this week’s This American Life episode provided the greatest potential Recipe Review ever: the original Coca-Cola recipe.

• This week USA Today’s Pop Candy featured to food-related Pop Five lists: Best Movie Foods and Top Anthropomorphic Foods. (Yes, I had to look up “anthropomorphic“)

• A new college-focused financial blog with local ties, College Money Mag, offers ways to reduce spending on food this year.

• Finally, instead of focusing on their new logo, Starbucks-crazed disciples can try their hands at yumsugar’s Starbucks-fact quiz.
