Diner Week Critique Special: Les Halles (Manhattan, N.Y.)

Review | Written and photographed by Nathan Mattise

Directions | Web site | Overall Rating: 5

I love Anthony Bourdain.

He is the most popular incarnation of all my major interests rolled into one person (music, food, travel, writing, people). I’ve read his book, I watch his show religiously and I’d preorder tickets if he ever made an appearance within four hours of me. So when in NYC, regardless of whether it’s a true diner or not, I’m eating breakfast at his establishment.

Meet my hallowed grounds of all that is culinary, Les Halles. Continue reading

Diner Week Critique: Doc’s Little Gem Diner (Syracuse, N.Y.)

Review | Written and photographed by Nathan Mattise

Directions | Web site | Overall Rating: 5

There are certain things that make a diner unmistakably charming: Variety in crowd type and size, a robust yet inexpensive menu offering specials and breakfast any time, an atmosphere that is just clean enough to maintain a “hole-in-the-wall / our secret spot” feel, and 24/7 hours that make it an oasis for hungry, bored or vital-conversation-needing folks alike. Review | Written and photographed by Nathan Mattise

Owners who double as head chefs become namesakes for their establishments all the time. These folks are also guaranteed to become local celebrities as long as their business thrives.

I didn’t know it at the time, but I recently ate  food prepared by the most famous example of the chef/owner/namesake  within the diner world.

Meet Kenny Shopsin and his Shopsin’s General Store. Continue reading

The best television is found through boredom and persistance. It’s done during those evenings without sporting events when your favorite shows are broadcasting repeats. It forces you to channel surf before you inevitably land on A&E or a Discover, History channel.

I’ve done my fair share of this and I want to know what is taking the Travel Channel so long. Ever see Breakfast Paradise or Extreme Superstores? They must’ve skipped Chenango, N.Y. because The Spot Diner is the biggest diner many will ever see. Continue reading

Diner Week Critique: Dino’s Breakfast & Lunch (Eynon, Pa.)

Review | Written and photographed by Nathan Mattise

Directions | Web site | Overall Rating:  4

Ever notice that even  top-notch celebrity chefs on the Food Network or Top Chef still claim nothing is more satisfying than their mother’s cooking?

Growing up in Archbald, Pa., my mother’s cooking consisted of Sunday breakfasts at Donovan’s or Sebastianelli’s. When I was finally old enough to branch out on my own, I needed a place to satisfy my own angsty teen hunger. Thus, Dino’s Breakfast & Lunch entered my life and became the go-to establishment for missing first period to grab an omelet instead.  Continue reading
