• The McRib was brought back by McDonald’s recently, spawning great McRib news such as the invention of the McRushmore and a McRib how-to.

• No Reservations may be in between seasons, but Bourdain is sneaking in a special holiday edition that follows his meal preparation adventures among other celeb chefs.  (Semi-related: Bourdain also announced the winner of his essay contest recently. Check out the short and sweet piece that was Bourdain’s favorite but only 843rd among voting fans?)

• Speaking of the holidays, leftover recipes are in high demand. Check out this gnocchi you can make from my personal fav Thanksgiving element, sweet potatoes.

• Finally, an interesting food podcast to mull over while recovering from any food induced inactivity. IFC.com discusses the elements of a good food movie and how’ve they’ve changed throughout the years.

 

NYT Opposites, another local foodie, a trio of late visionaries and a McMiracle.

• Some polar opposite culinary reporting from The NYT lately: you can choose to read about the 11 best secretly-good-for-you foods or you can instead focus on the “Bacon explosion” (and utilize some bacon band-aids if the explosion gets to you).

• Continuing in the spirit of promoting other local foodie blogs, you can check out CNY’s own Amateur Gourmet.

• Some sad news in the greater food community: three food pioneers died recently – the inventor of the Quarter Pounder, the inventor of Spaghetti-O’s and the founder of Taco Bell.

• Lastly, I recently experienced a personal McMircale. While roadtripping from Detroit to Oklahoma City, I lost my wallet… apparently at an Illinois McDonald’s.  What happened?

Yep. They returned it with everything in it. I was floored (and I vow to up my intake of Shamrock Shakes this year in honor of this unexpected kindness). As a small bit of gratitude, I sent them a little something that they’ll hopefully enjoy (via Vintage Funland on Etsy) .

• That’s new S.I. Newhouse School Dean Lorraine Branham trying my sandwich creation, The DBQ.  The school hosted a “Name That Sandwich!” contest to honor the new dean (in light of the former dean, Dean Rubin, being immortalized via… a reuben). I was flattered to make the top five but ultimately I came up just short (perhaps it’s because it wasn’t made with the requested cheese, inspired by Dorian’s “Texas-Style” Pizza).

• Yelp was first with the iPod augmented reality app, but does this one count? Starbucks has a pseudo-Starbucks card app that interacts with reality.

• If you’re artistic and culinary, you can make both edible faces and flags.

• Finally, with enough locations that it probably merits a flag, check out McDonald’s nation (in response to Subway’s math).

• Two more interesting food items over near the SU campus – one of the residence hall blogs has stories about a self-diagnosed Taco Bell addict and baker who gets his materials from dining halls.

• With the budding excitement in the SU Football team this year, this fairly comprehensive Syracuse tailgating guide might be helpful. (Not to mention, they link to our Thee Diner review).

• Finally, what’s the largest fast-food chain in the world? McDonald’s, right? Well, soon it may be Subway…
