Bourdain quotes, a new reviewer, the best local coffee shops and upcoming holiday posts

• In case you missed this week’s No Reservations holiday special, Eater served up the best 15 Bourdain quotes from it.

• One of the new Post-Standard restaurant reviewers recently penned her first piece on Namu. My favorite part: abiding by the reviewer ethos of anonymity.

• With the semester winding down over at SU and holidays from work just days away, the NewsHouse offers up the best places for some caffeine to help you press through the work.  (It’s missing some essentials – People’s Place – so you can always check out Pure Coffee to cover your bases).

• Finally, in honor of the year being almost up and the holidays upon us, a quick few announcements:

1) Diner Week 2010 is coming up in late December!

2)… so is the Diners Without Frosted Tips year-end list!

3) The best part of the holidays online, the Last Christmas blog, found a version that combines the loveable Wham! tune with..McDonalds… and bacon.

• The McRib was brought back by McDonald’s recently, spawning great McRib news such as the invention of the McRushmore and a McRib how-to.

• No Reservations may be in between seasons, but Bourdain is sneaking in a special holiday edition that follows his meal preparation adventures among other celeb chefs.  (Semi-related: Bourdain also announced the winner of his essay contest recently. Check out the short and sweet piece that was Bourdain’s favorite but only 843rd among voting fans?)

• Speaking of the holidays, leftover recipes are in high demand. Check out this gnocchi you can make from my personal fav Thanksgiving element, sweet potatoes.

• Finally, an interesting food podcast to mull over while recovering from any food induced inactivity. IFC.com discusses the elements of a good food movie and how’ve they’ve changed throughout the years.

Anyone who drives from ‘Cuse to NYC via the famous NY-17 knows the sad sights of abandoned diners lining the side of the road. Diners Without Frosted Tips decided to head out to capture these landmarks before they no longer existed. The ones where information could be found have been included in the photo slideshow above. More could be on the way the next time we travel NY-17 (or when we can find info on a diner, calling all Fishs Eddy Diner experts).

• We had a food truck appear near the SU campus this weekend. Coincidentlly, Good Magazine is in the middle of a contest asking what your ideal food truck would look like.

• A potentially less appetizing mobile food option: Domino’s has unveiled a new breakfast pizza.

• The Finger Lakes region is known for its wine, but worth noting their Cheese Trail is gaining steam (and had an event this past weekend).

• Finally, SyracuseDiners.com noted it’s been six months since Doc’s Little Gem went out of business. They celebrated the event with an exclusive Doc’s oriented preview of our upcoming “Dead Diners” project (click below):

 

SyracuseDiners.com praise, Best of ‘Cuse 2010, Saranac Fall Offerings and National Coffee Day

• One more round of praise to share for SyracuseDiners.com: Syracuse.com was a big fan, Syracuse University too. Today we received the biggest bit of journalist praise as the Online News Association nominated the site for a 2010 Online Journalism Award.

• The Syracuse New Times announced the winners of their “Best of Syracuse 2010” poll (their most participated poll ever). In the “best diner” category… Stella’s? Didn’t see that coming (and I don’t necessarily agree).

• Yesterday was “National Drink A Beer” day.  In honor, here are the tasting videos Saranac produced so you’re familiar with their seasonal offerings.

• Finally, today is National Coffee Day. Many places are having specials and online coffee banter is high (for instance, five pros and cons to the drink). In Syracuse and looking to celebrate? I’ll still take a People’s Place Austin Powers for my money.
