Booze and Breakfast: Cereal milk, oatmeal, bacon and coffee

Things quieted down recently while work on Barcode Magazine took over.  In honor of that work, this edition of links all celebrate the beautiful combo of booze and breakfast.

• Culinary heartthrobs Alie & Georgia took this idea literally by discovering a way to use cereal (specifically its milk) in an original, killer cocktail.

• Oatmeal has never been our favorite, but when it’s infused with bourbon we’ll at least listen.

• If our recent bacon whiskey didn’t appeal, perhaps a Bacon Bloody Mary better suits your fancy.

• Finally, these bottles look like classic brews but they’re actually freshly brewed and iced.

Hello Yuengling, goodbye bananas, goodbye boxed wine (guy) and goodbye Doc’s Little Gem

• Yuengling is seeking out consumer opinion on a variety of their beers. They did Black & Tan last month but this time around the traditional lager is up.

• 1) Who knew there was a “Banana Museum”? 2) It’s so sad that it’ll be closing.

• This week college campuses across the country lamented the passing of the boxed wine inventor (note that link is courtesy of Ted Leo).

• Finally, Doc’s Little Gem sadly closed its doors for the last time this past week. Check out my take (and hear from Doc himself) over at the SyracuseDiners.com blog.

“Beer & Cheese Soup” in the DWFT Test Kitchen

It still has yet to really snow in the ‘Cuse area, but it’s finally cold enough for a daily cup of soup. Inspired by a recent road trip, here’s a step-by-step account of a beer and cheese soup made with the help of a Yuengling cookbook.

• I started writing some reviews for local media outlet The NewsHouse. First up, King David’s over on Marshall St.

• Two more interesting food items over near the SU campus – one of the residence hall blogs has stories about a self-diagnosed Taco Bell addict and baker who gets his materials from dining halls.

• With the budding excitement in the SU Football team this year, this fairly comprehensive Syracuse tailgating guide might be helpful. (Not to mention, they link to our Thee Diner review).

• Finally, what’s the largest fast-food chain in the world? McDonald’s, right? Well, soon it may be Subway…

A Flay recap, spitty beer, creative control and another create-a-flavor contest

• So Bobby Flay did an outdoor cooking demo at the NY State Fair last week… very unique experience. Flay himself was an absolute showman. He encouraged audience interaction (either just shouting out and he responded, or formal questions mostly asked by little children) and was quick with one-liners throughout.  The unique part was how captivated the audience was. They roared when NY ingredients were used, nodded in agreement when Flay gave a bit of cooking advice and swooned over every scent and visual presented. It wasn’t as if anyone was close to Flay’s kitchen (he was up on a stage like a concert). It caught me off guard that so many people would be engaged by a relatively passive activity they were largely removed from.  That’s an absolute testament to the lure of Flay.

• The ingenuity of this mom would probably get me to eat squash too…

• … but I doubt she would sell me on this spit beer.

• Finally, who doesn’t love new flavor contests? The newest one comes from Vitamin Water who challenges consumers to develop the next bottle label.
